Wednesday afternoon, 6 July, 1415 local time
188nm from Bodo, 361nm to go to Jan Mayen, Speed 7.4 knots
For the very astute amongst you - yes, yesterday's blog started out wit a
bit of an error: it was of course Tuesday afternoon and not Monday
afternoon! Days just seem to blend into each other, and most of the time we
barely know what time it is (especially with the 24 hours light), let alone
what date or day! Will try to be more accurate in the future...
Just got off a great 10-14 watch with Torre (TJ) and Sigbjorn - the promised
winds outside the Lofoten Islands came true and we've been sailing (and
heeling over) since just after dinner yesterday.
It made for some interesting scenes as only three of our 7 climbers have
done some sailing before (one on the same trip 2 and 3 years ago) and most
of it has been coastal. The boating experience of the rest is mostly limited
to ferries!
As soon as we started heeling over, the first green faces were spotted and
it didn't take long for one of the crew to start feeding the fish that
delicious curry Luke and Camilla made. Let's keep it at that I was very
happy we had enough buckets on board!
Last night's midnight watch was pretty cold - we're having north/
northeasterly winds and it brings an icy chill with it, that feels as of it
comes straight of the iceplanes of Siberia.
It was beautiful outside though, with good 2, 3 meter waves carved out in
the slate grey sea and a sky like a patchwork quilt of long fabrics, done in
dozens of tints of grey. It lit up in patches with an orangey glow from
where the sun musthave been slightly dipping. Grey can be really beautiful!
The wind has now decreased a bit and we're not seeing 25-30 knots apparent
over the decks anymore, but a more sedate 12 to 20 knots. With the yankee
(the most forward sail) now rolled out as well, we're still doing a
respectable 6.5 to 7.5 knots, all with a much gentler motion to the boat,
allowing people to get their sealegs.
It's good to finally been sailing again, it has been more or less my first
proper sailing since we left Lerwick on the 9th of June as the very few
times we had some wind going to Bodo, it was all outside my watches.
Happy sailor right now.
